WHAT'S IS LEAN SIX SIGMA?
Lean Six Sigma is a business management strategy that today enjoys widespread application in many sectors of industry. Lean Six Sigma methodology seeks to improve the quality of process outputs by identifying and removing the causes of defects (errors) and variability in manufacturing and business processes. It uses a set of quality management methods, including statistical methods, and creates a special infrastructure of people within the organization ("Black Belts", "Green Belts", etc.) who are experts in these methods.

The term "Six Sigma" is derived from a field of statistics known as process capability studies. Originally, it referred to the ability of manufacturing processes to produce a very high proportion of output within specification. Processes that operate with "six sigma quality" over the short term are assumed to produce long-term defect levels below 3.4 defects per million opportunities. In other words, it is an approach to manage a process and control output within six sigmas, or 99.9999998 percent of the time. In terms of defects, this represents 3 defects in one million events.

Background
My most recent job experience involved managing and maintaining the Budgeting and Forecasting plans for D.R. Horton, with annual revenues in excess of five billion dollars. Prior to D.R. Horton, I worked for Excel Telecom and Echosphere, L.L.C. With Excel, I ensured that the various cost components were accounted for when offering prices to current and prospective customers along with conducting audits of current customers to verify they were meeting their minimum usage requirements. With Echosphere, L.L.C. dba The Dish Network I was heavily involved in working with retailers across the Southwest portion of the United States, advising them on marketing and advertising campaigns to increase their sales of Dish Network products.

In 2003 I was working for Dish Network, and a number of our largest retailers were starting to sell increasing numbers of DirecTV systems. I conducted a Five Whys analysis to determine the cause of this movement to DirecTV, and learned that many retailers were feeling abandoned by Dish Network as they weren’t getting the sales and product support they desired. Many retailers had been signed up to sell Dish Network products but the product/sales support after the fact was lacking. I organized, managed and coordinated a series of Retailer Meetings within the Southwest Region that visited the local markets and spoke with retailers in a group format about upcoming promotions, products and issues which the retailers were having. As a result of these meetings, retailer sales of those in attendance increased by 21% while Dish Network’s regional office registered a 17% increase in sales.

Processes Transformation: Development, Refinement and Implementation
The Forecasting and Budgeting Plans at D.R. Horton operated in an application called Business Objects. As a yearly/quarterly/monthly Forecast had never been performed by the company prior to 2007, the efforts to implement a Forecast procedure met with a significant amount of resistance. Operating the Forecast within the Business Objects application added to the problem as the Accountants in the Divisional offices didn’t understand the application and didn’t have the availability in their schedules to learn the application. Thus, the Forecasts were not being submitted in a timely manner or they were being submitted incorrectly, reflecting negatively upon our group which was reporting those forecasts. At my suggestion, I was tasked with providing a simpler and more effective means of communicating with the divisional offices pertaining to their Forecast submissions. The Business Objects application offered a Help Guide which was approximately 86 pages and was of no relevance to the information our Accountants were utilizing. Taking the most pertinent information from this Help Guide, repackaging it to include screen shots related to the views the Divisional offices were working with and reducing the size of the Guide by 78%, I produced a Help guide which greatly assisted the Division offices in their production of the monthly Forecast submission while allowing the Corporate Officers to have greater visibility of the issues related to the operations of the company.

Background
Robin’s background began in retail banking where she excelled in sales. She left the banking industry to take a technical role in telecommunications. She started her technical career as a System Administrator in inmate telecom. Robin worked her way up through the ranks to Director level. She quickly discovered her strength was seeing the “big picture.” She was selected by the Executive team to co-lead a Core Process Team that was challenged with creating all business processes in accordance with Sarbanes-Oxley requirements. This appointment made all the pieces of her background and education “fit.” Robin left inmate telecom for additional growth opportunities in IT Service Delivery where she learned metric design and trained others on Organization Design. She has recently obtained her Six Sigma Green Belt certification which added the final missing piece of applying metrics to business process elements at the micro-level.
